BMXers and skaters
get radical for the RNLI

Three fundraising events in aid of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) will take place at Transgression park, Ocean Terminal, Edinburgh on Sunday 23, Sunday 30 November and Sunday 7 December from 6pm to 10pm.

Design company SM+Co. have collaborated with the staff at Transgression park to run three separate competitions involving rollerblading (aka inline), skateboarding and BMX. Steven Mitchell, SM+Co.’s principal, said: “The RNLI challenged the creative industries in Scotland to raise funds in a creative manner, and our response was to involve the younger generation in an activity they enjoy – BMX and skating. The event will also make some of the younger competitors more aware of the RNLI and how it needs their support.”

The rollerblading event will take place first on the 23 November, with skateboarding on 30 November and finally, BMX on 7 December. Around 50 competitors are expected to take part in each event. Each event costs £10 to enter, with proceeds going to the RNLI.

There will be three age groups: under 12, 13 to 15, and 16 and over. Prizes will be given to the winner in each age group and a runner up. Prizes will also be presented to the best trick and the best bail in each age group (a bail is where a rider bails out mid way through a trick if the think they won’t complete it successfully).

Park owner, Dougie Graham, commented: “Since we opened the indoor park about a year ago, our members have improved their skills greatly. Fortunately, they ride it within their capabilities and accidents are rare. They do look forward to competitions though, as it gives them something to practice for.”

There is also a raffle for a BMX bike, skateboard, rollerblades and other prizes. Details about the raffle prizes are listed on the website: www.radness-unlimited.com The raffle starts on Saturday 22 November and will be drawn on Sunday 7 December.

Steven Mitchell, who was a keen BMX freestyler and racer in the Eighties, added: “We named the event Radness Unlimited since the letters, RNLI, are in those two words, plus it highlights how radical (or rad) the competitors will need to be in order to win their age group. Furthermore, BMXers and skaters sometimes get a bad press, so this event will show them in a more positive light.”

“Transgression park has the unique location of being based in Ocean Terminal. The park over looks the Firth of Forth and the Royal Yacht Britannia, so there is an obvious link there between the park and the sea – making this fundraiser for the RNLI all the more appropriate.”

“Stores in Ocean Terminal such as Athena, Fat Face, Game, Schuh Trespass and Waterstone’s have been very generous in donating prizes for the competition. In addition, stores in Edinburgh such as Route One, Edinburgh Bicycle Cooperative and Macdonald Cycles have contributed fantastic prizes. Brands and suppliers within the extreme sports industry have also donated prizes to the winners and freebies for all the competitors.”

You can sponsor Radness Unlimited by visiting the website. You can pay by credit or debit card, and the money will go directly to the RNLI.
